Plums and People

Updated: May 22, 2022

The joy of an imperfect plum.

In the everyday uneventful moments

I picked up a bag of plums and on the way to pick up my grandson I decided to try one. I was driving and the thought of plum juice spilling all over my cream linen pants did cross my mind as a not too flash event.

I did however take the risk. On examination the plum skins were dented, discoloured and obviously not A-grade. A-grades are all on their way out of the country and not for our consumption.

After prodding the plums and choosing the right colour and softness I must say I wasn't expecting a lot as the skins indicated they may not be great inside.

The soft flesh gave way and my taste buds were exposed to a delicious experience of the right amount of sweetness, texture and scent.

Judging the plum on its appearance I would have expected a less than this joyous experience.

My thoughts meandered to how we might judge people like plums. Not the right colour, looking bruised and beaten up by life, not the right demographics, not the right family connections or dynamics.

Consider this - when we open up our minds and hearts we may then have the pleasure of experiencing a richer, juicier life with different friends and connections. I can hear you say what's the connection with the rabbit and the dog. After 24 hours of working each other out they became best buddies, told each other secrets and ran circles round each other and they are not the same species.

imagine what humans could do if we embraced our different skins, learnt each other's secrets and loved on each other.
